The Un*selfie Is Coming!

This is the philanthropy cause for givingtuesday giving tuesday donations charities doing good community benefit

Ever popular, these self-portrait photos, usually taken with a smartphone or other portable device, have proliferated on social media networks.  Even the staid Oxford English Dictionary admitted the term “selfie” to its lexicon, as has the U.S. counterpart, the Merriam-Webster American Dictionary.  Now, welcome to the unselfie, which in a twist of irony uses a traditional selfie to spread the word of caring for others.

The #UNselfie is part of #GivingTuesday.  The use of the hashtags is deliberate; #GivingTuesday harnesses the power of the global presence of the social media to spread the word worldwide the importance of giving of oneself to the community, the form of money, food, or time.  Tuesday, December 2, 2014, will be the third such annual day of giving.  The website is a portal enabling individuals, corporations, and foundations to give to their charitable organization of choice.  Individuals then will take an “unselfie” and post it on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, with the announcement how they gave.

My agency, Advancing Opportunities, is participating!  We have great community programs in all parts of New Jersey that offer children and adults with all disabilities enjoyable social recreation activities.  Advancing Opportunities also offers assistive technology and advocacy programs.  To find out more – or how, please click here.
