Today, October 25, is Spina Bifida Day. As is common among disability awareness and advocacy organizations, the Spina Bifida Association is emphasizing ability, courage in meeting challenges to live life to the fullest, to dream and achieve. The most common birth defect in the U.S., Spina Bifida means “split spine,” which leads to paralysis. Women who are pregnant or are considering pregnancy should take 400 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid, which can help prevent this birth defect. The cause of Spina Bifida, however, is not completely understood. The Spina Bifida Resource Network also has much useful information on living with the condition.
